Our new Sustainability Brochure is here!

Updated: Sep 10

With the beginning of the new academic year, we updated our sustainability brochure! Not only did we give it a fresh design but also some of the content changed, so be excited for more food gems, tips and volunteering opportunities!
You can also find the best places to make community over shared values. We’ve also included some additional tips about how to best practise digital sustainability during your time at the UvA.
Especially if you just moved to Amsterdam, this guide provides you great local insights on how to live sustainably in your new home.
It’s important to note that some of the language in this brochure might sound like ‘lifestyle environmentalism’. This outlook centres individual choices in the battle against climate change, seeks outcomes through individual consumer choices, and positions modern middle-class lifestyles as the primary driver of ecological destruction.
While it is important for all of us to lead more sustainable lifestyles, it is also important to keep in mind that production also constrains consumption choices and establishing sustainability is not merely a matter of changing individual consumer choices.
It is critical to remember that power over production is concentrated in the hands of those who control productive resources. Therefore, it is not enough to simply change our personal consumption choices and only hold individuals accountable. This accountability should also be expanded to corporations, governments and supranational organisations through calls for systemic change
Instead, we invite you to use this document as an introduction to the many sustainable organisations that drive the sustainability movement in Amsterdam, and the Netherlands more widely.
