This October here at the UvA Green Office we set out to challenge ourselves and you to do better on a day to day basis, well 21 days to be exact! The challenge consisted of some simple ways to make a big change in your environmental impact and waste habits.
We were so happy that so many of you participated and hope that you are inspired to onboard these in your life going forward. For those of you joined the entire 21-day challenge, congratulations (!), this will likely be easier for you to achieve, as did you know that research shows that it takes 21 days to form a habit? That first cold shower might have felt like the real test but you aced it and helped reduce your energy waste (and bill), on top of that I bet you even felt a bit more refreshed than normal!
Some of the other challenges such as shopping for seasonal vegetables and having no food waste are vitally important in defeating the cycle of waste, not to mention Co2 in transport and production created to cater to our demands.
I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again, one person’s trash is another person’s treasure! Organizing a clothing swap with friends and second hand shopping are some of my personal favorites when it comes to this sustainability challenge (and in general), their such a fun way to go green and find those special pieces for your wardrobe.
With the global pandemic still very much present in our day-to-day, so are face masks. Disposable face masks are ending up everywhere from streets to oceans around the world, adding to existing waste problem we are facing. Wearing a mask is most importantly to protect the people around you, but we should still protect the planet while we’re at it. Using a reusable face mask when possible is a way to do both.
We hope you enjoyed these challenges and the road to our most sustainable selves
